- Don't let water run needlessly while doing dishes, shaving, brushing your teeth, etc.
- Take shorter showers. Keeping your showers under five minutes can save up to one thousand gallons per month!
- Plug the bathtub before you turn on the water and adjust the temperature as the bath fills up.
- Fix leaky faucets: just one drip per second can waste two thousand gallons of water per year.
- Try to run the dishwasher or washing machine only when it is full.
- If you live in an older home consider adjusting your plumbing with low-flow fixtures and low-flush toilets.
- Water your lawn only when necessary and in mild climate times of the day.
- Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water to water plants later; this also works when washing vegetables or dishes in the sink.
- Place water convection vessels such as barells or large buckets to collect rain water from down spouts and rain gutters. Use the water to water your plants.

How YOU Can Make A Difference.
Sorry, for some reason the last entry didn't post correctly before so here are some tips that you can use in your daily lives to conserve water.
How YOU can make a difference
You can start water conservation in your home today. Here are some tips to save water:
Together we can make a difference!
- Don't let the water run needlessly when washing dishes, shaving, or brushing your teeth.
- Take shorter showers... keeping showers less than 5 minutes can save up to 1,000 gallons per month.
- Plug the bathtub before turning the water on, and then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.
- Fix leaky faucets: Just one drip a second can waste 2,000 gallons of water per year.
- If practical, try to run the dishwasher or washing machine only when completely full.
- If you live in an older home, consider replacing your plumbing with low-flow fixtures and low-flush toilets.
- Water your lawn only when necessary and consider landscaping with native plants adaptable to your climate's conditions.
- Place a bucket in the shower to catch excess water to use to water plants later. This also works when washing dishes or vegetables in the sink.
- Place water collection vessels such as barrels or large buckets to collect rain water from down spouts and gutters. Use the water to water your plants.
- Use the garbage disposal minimally and compost instead.

Our Project
Did you know that when you put food down your disposal you are ruining water and adding to landfills? When you but food down your disposal it can't be recycled. The water then goes to landfills or in the wild and could make animals very sick. It also takes more energy and power to wash food down your drain and ultimately costs you more money. Instead of putting it down the drain put it in your trash or in your very own compost! It's as easy as that! It not only will save you money but help save the earth as well.
The Challenge
Lexus has a contest every year to make this earth a better place to live. They have different categories land and water or air and climate. We are participating in the land/water category. The contest is for all junior high and high school students and they compete against each other. If they win they earn a cash prize and move on to the next round. The ultimate goal, however, is to make the earth cleaner and healthier. We are very lucky to participate in this contest and hope to do our very best to win the grand prize of ten thousand dollars! Part of the money goes to our school and science classroom, the rest will be split within our group. Wish us luck!
